First of all, a brief rundown of the awesomeness that is Giorgio Moroder:
Heard of Donna Summer? The movie Scarface? Flashdance? Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories? Giorgio had his Italian hands in all of those and more. Check his Wikipedia page and get ready to waste an hour looking at links and YouTube videos. Neverending Story? Yeah, he scored that, too.
They call him (or at least he calls himself) the father of DISCO.
So papa disco Giorgio Moroder decided to bless the Haim sisters with a remix of their hit “Forever.” Give it a listen. Moroder vocoder fun starts about 1:30 in.
Here’s a new cheerleader-beat-you-up-in-the-parking-lot-high-school-best-frenemies screamer pop jam from Sleigh Bells. “Bitter Rivals” is the title track off their upcoming album, due October 8.
Check Sleigh Bells out at the El Rey on October 15.
Cults – Static
The teaser video for the new Cults album Static (out October 15) just sucked me into my nostalgia for the movie Poltergeist through its creepy TV static. I keep thinking of that scene when Carol Anne slides across the kitchen floor wearing a football helmet and it seems like it might be fun to have a poltergeist in your house. And then everything gets really scary and terrifying from there (i.e. getting attacked by clown dolls in your bedroom type of stuff).
Cults also have an El Rey show date, scheduled for November 12.
MGMT – MGMT
Why did MGMT wait for their 3rd album (due out September 17) to release a self-titled album? MGMT are funny lads sometimes. They even told Rolling Stone, “I don’t even know if it’s music we would want to listen to.” Oh dear.
Also, this: YOUR LIFE IS A LIE. And for that, MGMT, I thank you.
Haim – Days Are Gone
Finally, the debut album from the breakout sister act Haim is almost on the digital shelves, due out September 30. While we wait, let’s watch the video for their new song “The Wire” that I don’t like as much as the first 2 singles they released, but hey, I still like it.
